Elementary School FAQs

What ages and grades does Elementary School serve?

The elementary school serves students in Grades 1-5, typically ages 6-10.

How big are the classes?

Classes have a maximum of 25 students. Additionally, Pre-K through Grade 2 classrooms include a dedicated teacher’s aide, providing extra support for younger learners.

What curriculum does Northview follow?

We follow an American curriculum aligned with the Common Core State Standards for English and Mathematics, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards for Science. It ensures consistency with top American schools globally.

Will my child have homework in Elementary School?

Grades 1-2 have no mandatory homework. We provide optional home practice activities. Grade 3 homework remains optional. Grades 4-5 begin receiving occasional homework to gradually build responsibility and develop time management skills in preparation for middle school.

How is my child assessed?

Elementary uses standards-based grading with four progress descriptors: Beginning, Developing, Proficient, and Advanced. We examine multiple sources of evidence, including classwork, assessments, projects, and teacher observations, rather than relying solely on test scores.

When will I receive reports on my child's progress?

You’ll receive termly report cards highlighting your child’s growth and next steps. Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled after each marking period, with additional meetings available upon request.

What languages are taught?

All students receive instruction in English language arts. Arabic and Islamic Studies begin in KG1 and continue throughout the Elementary Years. Non-Arabic-speaking students are introduced to Spanish as a second or additional world language.

Are co-curricular activities available?

Co-curricular activities (CCAs) are optional and available to students in Grades 1-5 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays afternoons. Activities include sports, arts, clubs, and service projects. If your child is not attending a CCA, they must be picked up at the regular dismissal time.
