Middle School Curriculum

From Guided Learning to Personal Voice

Middle School is a transformative period. We prioritize connection, independence, and choice. Our students develop academically, emotionally, and socially, supported by dedicated pastoral care and strong teacher partnerships.

The curriculum broadens in depth and scope, encouraging students to shape their own learning. Elective options and regular teacher check-ins give students meaningful input into their subjects and skill development.

Students move from a single primary teacher to working with subject specialists. They manage their schedules, take responsibility for assignments in multiple classes, and learn to seek support when needed. Students find their voice, build confidence, and prepare for the independence of high school.

The Curriculum

Middle School students follow the American curriculum, which is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for English and Math, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards for Science. The academic program undergoes significant deepening, preparing students for high school-level work.

Core subjects:

English, Math, Science, Social Studies

Languages and culture:

Arabic and Islamic Studies, Spanish, Qatar History

Enrichment:

Art, Music, Physical Education, Eco-Awareness

Learning is inquiry-based and project-driven. Students might design experiments to test water quality in local ecosystems, analyze historical documents to understand global conflicts, or create multimedia presentations exploring social justice issues. This approach develops research skills, critical thinking, and the ability to connect knowledge across disciplines.

How We Assess Progress

Middle School uses a holistic grading system that reflects both academic achievement and personal development. Final grades are divided into three areas:

  • Major Assessments (50%) – Tests, essays, projects, and presentations that evaluate mastery of key concepts
  • Minor Assessments (30%) – Quizzes, homework, classwork, and smaller assignments that provide ongoing feedback
  • Affective Achievement (20%) – Personal development, including effort, responsibility, collaboration, and participation

This approach recognizes that success in middle school depends on more than just academic skill. Character, resilience, and the ability to work with others are equally important. The affective grade helps students develop these crucial habits before entering high school, where the focus shifts solely to academic performance.

Grades are calculated using a percentage system and letter grades (A through F). Progress is reported at the end of each marking period, with parent-teacher conferences scheduled regularly and additional meetings available as needed.

Support Services

Middle School students have access to comprehensive support:

Pastoral counseling supports students in managing stress, building healthy relationships, developing self-awareness, and maintaining well-being during adolescence.

Behavioral support offers individualized plans to help students manage emotions, develop positive habits, and address specific challenges.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) services are available through Grade 8 for students who need language support to fully access the curriculum.
